hey guys, you know they say that the power of the shot should come from your legs, and not the arms. But I see most nba players not using their legs while shooting. like look at this guy, I see the power comes from his hands but they are also coming from the legs, and i see all comment saying you gotta use more legs and jump when you shoot and so on. ( please ignore his shooting form):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqdYLPb4EUA
well his shot is compartmentalized, it's not one fluid motion with a proper follow through.. it's "jerky".
and also, they say your hands should be relaxed, take a look at steve nash shooting, it looks stiff when he holds his foollow through: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzQruMtrqQw
dno why you're listening to people on youtube etc.. if you're form looks like his then you're shooting right, if it looks like first guy then you're shooting wrong.. nash is just following through and snapping his wrist, he's not thinking about it, it just happens all in one motion.. he's not stiff but he's not completely relaxed either, hard to explain.
So what do you guys think about the legs porvidin power for shot and the shooting form of steve nash? I've heard steve nash has a good shooting form.
Thanks guys
well you don't need much power to shoot a jump shot, so it's kind of irrelevant.. guy's who leap high off the ground when shooting, like maurberry (spelling?), usually aren't consistent shooters because if their jumping ability is "fatigued" or high/less than normal, their shot is going to be a bit off.. the best jump shooters usually are one's who just get 12" or less off the ground, not ~18+" like marburry and people like him get.. when you're doing pullup jumpers off the dribble though, the height of your jump will differ alot so..
have you ever been to a shooting coach? their are very simple drills they teach to get the jumper working right.. it's a simple repetition drill where you're a foot in front of the basket, just working on mechanics.. that's one of the best ways to learn proper mechanics on the follow through/wrist snap/arc.
it really comes down to being in all the right positions, subconsciously.. it has to be a reflex.. if you're at all thinking about your jumpers in a game etc, then you're screwed.. proper feet position, belly button position, shooting elbow/off hand position, follow through/wrist snap, etc.. on every shot.
one more thing, isn't larry birds shooting set point a little to high up on top of the head? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzyfhp67TEk
ya larry bird's release was a bit too high for my liking, i prefer nash/ray allen's release etc.
here's a ray allen vid:
