Fast kid obviously has a lot of potential with athletics considering he's running times that are competitive at U16s when he's only 12.

That's pretty damn impressive. I always get wary though when the media starts hyping prodigies up when they haven't even hit puberty.

yup. apparently one thing college football coaches ask parents when they're evaluating whether to recruit a talented kid or not is, "can he grow a beard?" if the answer is no, then the kid is talented despite being developmentally in line with or behind his peers and probably hasn't reached his full potential. if the answer is yes, then there's a higher chance he's just matured quicker and so can beat up on the less developed kids. but once they mature, he's screwed.

Yeah that's the thing with junior sports. No matter how good somebody is until they actually do it at a senior level their just 'potential' or talent. Sometimes you see the talent play out (Lebron James, Usain Bolt), sometimes you don't (Ronnie Fields, Mark-Lewis Francis).
Personally I know 1 guy that's 20 and runs 100m in 10.91 and 200m in low 22s. That's pretty fast but 6 years ago when he was 14 he was running 100m in 11.53 and 200m in 23.17. In his case he was just an early developer and so despite training for the past 6 years he hasn't managed to even improve a single second on either of his 100 or 200 times. But back when he was 14 everybody was on his nuts because his times were impressive for his age.

Well this kid has improved quite a bit. He just won the U14 All-Schools Australian 200m title in 21.73sec!! Pretty phenomenal.

He also has the "short Achilles" feature that we start to see again and again in good athletes (think Stefan Holm).
Current PR status:

All time squat: 165 kg/Old age squat: 130 kg
All time deadlift: 184 kg/Old age deadlift: 140 kg
All time bench: 85 kg/Old age bench: 70kgx5reps
All time hip thrust (same as old age hip thrust): 160kgx5reps

What do you mean? I thought it was the other way around?

A long Achilles is good for the standing vertical jump, whereas a short Achilles is good for a one-leg jump because it allows a shorter (quicker), more powerful rebound.

The thing with the highly attached Achilles (high cut calves) is that they are usually present in people that also have a bunch of other structurally advantageous factors (narrow hips, long legs etc etc). So it's not just the long Achilles in these people, the long Achilles is just a good indicator of a overall "solid" structure for jumping advantage.

I really hope he doesn't get siphoned off to rugby or footy, he could be a world-beater.
