Sifan Hassan, gutsy 300m. man she gives everything. always completely spent by the end.

Cheruiyot wins the bowerman mile. Great finish to that race.

Coleman, 9.70 100m.

lol @ people thinking Norman was going to break the 400m WR today, gtfo. people are nuts. he ran like 44.60. How's he going to break the WR without people helping him (ie a crazy fast race). Just don't see it happening unless he's pushed.

Castor 1:55 800m.

Emma with another huge 2nd place in the 300m steeple.

glad Shelbo got beat today in the 1500m. her sit & kick style is awful.

hangs near the back of the pack until the last lap then goes hard the last 200m.

adarq, looks like your boy jakob ingebrigtsen ran a 3:51.30, PB but got nipped by his brother for a podium spot by two hundredths of a second. he's still a teenager. gotta imagine he's got WR potential.

great race. cheruiyot took care of business and wasn't really threatened at the end but everything behind him was dramatic.

ya i know. he's a monster. 3:51 @ 18 y/o. that 3:43 WR is absolutely psycho, not sure i'd think about him in that territory yet. but man he races with balls. that's why the sky's the limit for this kid. not only does he have talent/work ethic, but he hangs up there with the Kenyans etc.. he almost chased down Cheruiyot 2 races ago.

Cheruiyot is the best over the last few years. He's a front runner & always brings it. Really love watching him race.

His "teammate" (manangoi) is having a really bad year so far, it's weird.

As for the WR, the biggest threat to it right now is Yomif IMHO, but he's so hit-or-miss. When he's on tho, man is he lethal. He ran that 3:46 indoor mile recently (indoor WR). He wants to run 5k/10k for Ethiopia in the Olympics I think. But there's some real monsters at 5k/10k right now (barega, rhonex, cheptegei). I mean he might not even make the Ethiopian squad, that country is so stacked. There's probably 3-4 Ethiopians better than him in both 5k & 10k. I think he'd actually have a better chance at 1500m if he really focused on it. I doubt there's anyone in his country who could compete with him at 1500m. It looks like he makes himself "stale" with some of these 5k's he races.

There's lots of incredible young dudes out there right now. Jakob, Rhonex, and Barega for example.

Barega dropped a 12:43 5k @ 18..

Rhonex dropped a 26:45 road 10k @ 18..

Jakob dropped a 3:51 mile @ 18..

The distance running future is BRIGHT AS FU*K. Exciting. :wowthatwasnutswtf:

:D

that also just shows how tiny the margins are at the top and how hard it is to improve. what you're saying is, in effect, that you don't think jakob ingebrigtsen can improve by 3.5% on his current PB, even though he's still growing and has only a few years of serious training under his belt. and you're probably right. well, i hope someone gets it. would be a thrill.

i hope someone gets it as well. it's an incredible record. 2nd place in that race also broke the WR and ran a "slower" 3:43. Yomif has gotten the closest since (indoor - 3:47.01), i think.

https://www.iaaf.org/records/all-time-toplists/middlelong/one-mile/outdoor/men/senior

crazy. 3:43, 3:43, 3:44, 3:46. It's one of those nearly untouchable records.

Jakob ran 3:52 last year at the Prefontaine Classic. His 3:51 is a great improvement for sure. Every second from here on is enormous, going to be extremely difficult getting that 3:43, especially the way milers/1500m guys run nowadays. Too many sit & kick races. You rarely see people going under 3:50 anymore. If more guys pressed up front, you'd see these times start dropping.

Cheruiyot could probably consistently get under 3:50 (in fast races) right now, but even he lacks that next level to get under 3:46 IMHO. Jakob has no fear trying to chase down Cheruiyot so, he won't be too far off chasing a guy like that. He'll get some big times that way.

Jakob is up there battling with Kenyans, he's the real deal lmao.

Can't wait to see how everything plays out for the Olympic trials/2020 Olympics. Lots of young hungry folks looking to takeover.

Wow, nice search engine by IAAF there.
Did a quick search. Since 1/1/2015 , the last 5 years that is with the current one being the 5th, only 4 times below 3:50 were registered, none of which was below 3:49.
15 times the last decade, none below 3:47.
Dunno, 3:43 seems like a few galaxies away.
Target training paces (min/km), calculated from 5K PR 22:49 :
Easy run : 5:48
Tempo run : 4:50
VO2-max run :4:21
Speed form run : 4:02

---

it's the biggest trick in the run game.. go slow to go fast. it doesn't make sense until it smacks you in the face and you're like ....... wtf?

ya exactly. that's what i was on about.

times have gotten alot slower.

IMHO, i really think it has to do with races being more strategic now. there's too many sit & kick types out there. need more people who are willing to push the limits early.

an example would be Eliud Kipchoge in the marathon.. he's not a "sit & kick type", goes out at world record pace pretty much every race. That's the kind of mindset we'd need to see from today's milers. I never see it.

here's the perfect example of what's wrong with today's milers, 2016 1500m results:

Quote
Results:
1. 3:50.00 Matt Centrowitz (USA)
2. 3:50.11 Taoufik Makhloufi (ALG)
3. 3:50.24 Nick Willis (NZL)
4. 3:50.29 Ayanleh Souleiman (DJI)
5. 3:50.58 Abdalaati Iguider (MAR)
6. 3:50.87 Asbel Kiprop (KEN)
7. 3:51.06 David Bustos (ESP)
8. 3:51.09 Ben Blankenship (USA)
9. 3:51.39 Ryan Gregson (AUS)
10. 3:51.45 Nate Brannen (CAN)
11. 3:51.68 Ronald Musagala (UGA)
12. 3:51.73 Charlie Grice (GBR)
13. 3:56.76 Ronald Kwemoi (KEN)

The winning time is the slowest in an Olympic final since 1932, when the men's world record in the mile was 4:09. Here's how much Centro won his historic gold by; that's Willis's leg on the right of the frame.

props to Centro but that's "pathetic". everyone just sat back, relaxed, and tried to win on a kick. Prefontaine was rolling in his grave.

In fact, at the recent Prefontaine classic, Centro ran 3:52 for the mile, not too far from his gold medal 1500m, but 100m longer.

Cheruiyot ran 3:50.49 @ Pre .. ALMOST faster than the gold medal 1500m in 2016.

That's not going to happen in 2020.. Cheruiyot will make sure of that.

I want to see people gun it. I definitely get frustrated watching slow sit & kick races. All you need is *one* person to go out hard, make it a real race, & dismantle that slow "hang back" pack.

like i always say about my dude RHONEX, he's the real deal.

50k bonus today, beating a long standing peach tree 10k road record. it says he ran 27:01, but you can also see him crossing at 26:59. He did this *in heat/humidity* and it's the fastest time ever run in the US (for a road 10k).

RHONEX is 19.

his brother (?) came in 2nd.

Brigid Kosgei also got a record.

4 people got 50k each today, because four records were broken. lol.

Lausanne Diamond League was awesome.

Yomif won the 5k w/ Barega #2, Cheruiyot the 1500m with Jakob #2.

Jakob with a huge PB, 3:30 !

Cheruiyot drops a nasty 3:28.. :ibrunning:

Jakob needs to change his style up slightly... his final kick has him running WIDE AS FU*K on the last two turns (of the last lap). He's running OVER-DISTANCE. Cheruiyot front runs and hugs the inside of lane 1. Jakob runs wide alot.. and still dropped a 3:30. that's kind of psycho.

1500m:

oh ya, major mistake by gebriwhet too.. damn. rough. celebrated one lap early.
