It was quickly discovered that USA's Fred Lorz, who crossed the line first at the 1904 Olympics, had cheated by flagging down a car and riding 11 miles as a passenger. He was disqualified and the victory was awarded to his compatriot Thomas Hicks, who (narrowly) survived the rigours of a race run in temperatures reaching 32 degrees Celsius thanks to a combination of brandy and strychnine.

Hassan is so impressive.

Ethiopian teenager Amdework Walelegn, 19, who already this year has wins at the Istanbul Half Marathon (59:50) and the Laredo 10K in Spain (27:37)

19 and already under 60:00 hm and 28:00 10k. jesus.

Another notable American in the field is Olympic gold medal triathlete Gwen Jorgensen, 32, who last fall retired from the triathlon and began her quest to reach the 2020 Olympic marathon. An All-American runner at the University of Wisconsin, she won a 10,000m invite at Stanford (31:55.68) this spring, placed 4th at the USATF Half Marathon Championship (1:10:58) and took 5th  at the USATF 10K Championship at the Peachtree Road Race earlier this month.

i read a story about her recently. she's a beeeeeast. realized after college that she didn't have the talent to be world elite but has a stupefying work capacity, so got recruited by USA triathlon and hey gold medal.

she ran pretty "bad" today but, apparently crazy humid.

almost everyone ran "slow".

top 4 females did pretty good tho.. but on the men's side.. omfg. Jake with the slaughter.
