1995 best/worst of list

Quote
The envelope please... Best race: Tamarac Turkey Trot.

For the third year in a row, this race is the prototype of what a good, old-fashioned road race should be by attracting more than 600 runners on Thanksgiving morning. It also showed why race officials Lauren Scott and Ed Doyle, and the City of Tamarac Recreation Division, may go from handscoring to computer scoring next year.

my hometown race. often ends up being "best race".

Quote
These days runners want whistles and bows for their money. It's not enough to run a course, especially in 5Ks, the most popular distance. Great food; great race T-shirt; entertainment;, plenty of water; cheery, helpful volunteers; and, accurate certified courses and race results are imperative if the running community is to grow. Health fairs such as the ones held at the Jingle Bell Jog 5K and inaugural Imperial Point 5K were great innovative ideas.

ah cool. 1996 this gem appeared:

Quote
Best first-year race: Holiday Fantasy of Lights 5K, Tradewinds Park.

GRAND PRIX SERIES GETS SECOND RUN

Quote
The South Florida Grand Prix Series will return next season after a successful debut during the 1995-96 running season.

Quote
Dates and races selected for the series are:
Oct. 6, Coconut Grove 5-Miler;
Nov. 4, Home Depot 10K Run;
Nov. 17, Rotary Half-Marathon;
Nov. 23, Fantasy of Lights 5K;
Dec. 1, Baby Boomer 10K;
Dec. 8, Boca Raton 10K;
Feb. 8, Boca Dare 5K;
March 22, Imperial Point 5K.

Quote
No first-year races are allowed in the Grand Prix.

Quote
The series was started to breathe new life into the South Florida running community. Aside from a few scoring glitches and one or two poorly-run events, the series accomplished what it set out to do. There was at least a 10 percent increase in runner turnout at each of the grand prix races.

up 10% for each grand prix race, the initial year.

Quote
In an effort to rejuvenate road racing and bring the South Florida running community together, the South Florida Grand Prix Running Series returns for the 1996-97 season.

Quote
After working out the bugs, improving the format and increasing the quality of prizes from $700 to $5,000

sponsored by usatf:

Quote
It is the first of 10 races in South Florida's only running series, sanctioned by USA Track and Field of Florida

Quote
Last year, there was a 20 to 25 percent increase in each of the series races.

Quote
Prizes at the conclusion of the series are awarded for the top three overall, Masters and Grand Masters runners, and top 3 in every five-year age group from 15-19 to 70-and-over. Awards are also given to the top teams in the team competition. Teams consist of five runners and compete in one of nine categories, up from five categories last year. Last year only first place was awarded.

Quote
"I have always felt that the running community down here was very poorly organized," said Tom Vladimir, South Florida Grand Prix Running Series chairman, and recently-named Road Runners Club of America south rep for Florida.

"The running community has not been able to do a lot for the runners because it's so disorganized. We want to unite the running clubs and start bigger events. Our next idea is to work on a big race where all the clubs are involved with organizing it.

Quote
The other series races through March 22 are:
Winternationals;
Rotary Half-Marathon;
Fantasy of Lights;
Boca 10K;
Home Depot Run;
Daily News Half-Marathon;
Boca DARE Run;
Race For the Cure in Miami;
Imperial Point 5K.

Only Palm Beach Runners Club events are not represented in the series.

one of the first chip timed races in SFL, Lighthouse 5k in 1996

Quote
In brisk 60-degree weather, the Real Time Champion Chip made its Florida road race debut.

The revolutionary computer scoring system, introduced by Rick Stern of Weston and his company Split Second Timing, alleviates the need for separate chutes, handtimers and volunteers. It was used at Boston and the Olympics.

Because of misplaced race results, the Holiday Fantasy of Lights will not be used in the South Florida Grand Prix Series scoring according to South Florida Striders' president Brian Keno.

A stringer full of runners' names was lost during the race making it impossible to score the race completely an apologetic Keno said. The series will now score only nine races. ...

Keno's first win. (he's one of the best grand masters runners in FL, and grand master marathoners in the US).

https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1998-03-01-9802280168-story.html

Quote
Four years after buying his first pair of running shoes and armful of running books, Brian Keno of Fort Lauderdale won his first road race Saturday at the Westfair 5K Run at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds.

Keno, who turns 36 today, overtook a small pack of runners midway through the race and ran uncontested for the last half-mile to win in 15 minutes and 58 seconds. Keno, a consistent age group finisher, has been running competitively since late 1993.

David Bowden, nationally ranked masters runner. 4:34 mile @ ~41 or something?

he raced a horse..

Quote
Bowden, the Boyd Anderson track and cross country coach who recently finished ninth in the New York Road Runners Mercedes Mile on Fifth Avenue in 4:34.98, will race a trotter one-eighth of a mile on the dirt track.

they had a masters championship in palm aire.. i think that's where my grandpa eventually moved.

1988.

tamarac turkey trot started out as a 3 miler?

https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1988-11-25-8803080816-story.html

that part of the history of these races, is confusing. some say 3 miles, some say 5k/3.1.

1990.

Benji Durden coached Mary Menton.. interesting.

https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1990-10-05-9002170923-story.html

Quote
CORAL SPRINGS -- The routine has changed now that Mary Level-Menton has a baby daughter and is still in the relatively early stages of a comeback.

Menton, 27, of Coral Springs, was one of South Florida's best runners in 1987-88.

A member of the U.S. marathon team, Menton competed in the 1987 World Championships in Rome, qualified for the '88 Olympic trials at the Houston- Tenneco Marathon and is a 1992 Olympic hopeful.

Menton resumed training this year six weeks after Sara's birth, Feb. 13. Coached by ex-Olympian Benji Durden of Boulder, Colo., Menton is running 70 to 100 miles per week. Only now, she has company on her training runs.

you never heard this anymore .. having a baby improves female running performance:

Quote
"My body has definitely changed," Menton said. "Women are faster and stronger because our heart muscles increase in size when the heart is pumping more blood when you have a child. Benji was very conservative with me. We started walking the first day. Then when I wanted to run 6 miles, he would have me do only 2."

The Florida Pride Mervyn's 5K Run/Walk Race Series will take place in malls that have Mervyn's. Host sites include the Boynton Beach Mall, Boca Raton Mall, Broward Mall, Miami International Mall, Cutler Ridge Mall and Coral Square. Mervyn's hopes to create a grand prix format next year with more races spread over a few weeks.

-- Most improved race: Tamarac Turkey Trot, Nov. 26, Tamarac City Hall. After running out of water its first year, this low-key event run by the city's recreation department has grown into a top caliber race.

damn .. i had just read about him coming down to SFL in a prior article, to speak/race etc.

-- Worst moment: Elite Masters runner Barry Brown's suicide over the holidays. A frequent visitor to South Florida races and holder of 16 American Masters records, Brown, 48, will be sorely missed.
